Elihu Professor of History and Global Affairs at Yale

Odd Arne Westad (He/Him) is an Elihu professor of history and global affairs at Yale. He is a scholar of modern international and global history, with a specialization in the history of eastern Asia since the 18th century. Before Yale, he taught at the London School of Economics (LSE) and Harvard University. His research has covered the history of the Cold War, China-Russia relations, the Chinese civil war, the Chinese Communist Party, China’s late twentieth century economic reforms, and the histories of empire and imperialism in Asia and world-wide. Westad serves as director of International Security Studies at Yale. He is also a fellow of the British Academy and of several other national academies, a visiting professor at Peking University, and a research associate of the Harvard Fairbank Center.
